As a community, we’ve embarked on a 100-Day Challenge to end Veteran homelessness; it kicked off September 10th  and goes through December 21st . During this 100 days, we are working to move 14 Veterans per week off the streets/out of shelters and into a place for them to call home permanently. Our ultimate goal is to house 180 vets in 100 days.  It’s a huge community undertaking, but we’re committed to it and are working collaboratively with many partner organizations, businesses, landlords and other community members to make it happen.

Texans will celebrate the 35th annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
The Fort Worth Police Department invites all residents to participate in the celebration. Residents are asked to turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outdoors with their neighbors, public safety officers and other city personnel.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide. Texas celebrates the event on the first Tuesday in October. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and more.
National Night Out is designed to:
Heighten awareness of crime prevention.
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts.
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.
Sign up by Sept. 27.

--- From the RETIREE ACTIVITIES OFFICE Bulletin: TRICARE update

http://www.nhc-ul.org/Bulletin%20180801%20(PDF%20Edition).pdf

The final version of the fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act no longer includes a plan that would have resulted in unfair fee increases for many retirees and their families enrolled in TRICARE

The final version of the fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, released 23 JUL, no longer includes a plan that would have resulted in unfair fee increases for many retirees and their families enrolled in TRICARE. This decision, made by leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, follows a campaign from the Military Officers Association of America and thousands of their members to get the measure removed, which would have eliminated the grandfathering for beneficiaries enrolled in TRICARE prior to January 1, 2018 with the intent to establish a single co-payment structure for all beneficiaries. Congress's inboxes were flooded with over 17,000 MOAA-suggested messages explaining that yet another round of fee increases was unacceptable for TRICARE beneficiaries.

This mass swell of grassroots support, combined with many thousands more messages from partners in The Military Coalition, played an important role in shaping the conversation as the defense bill went to conference committee.

--- From Your Hubmaster:   Formed in 1985, The Military Coalition (TMC) is a consortium of 31 military, veterans’ and uniformed services organizations working cooperatively to maintain a strong national defense. TMC represents more than 5.5 million current and former service members and their families and survivors.  https://www.ausa.org/articles/military-coalition-works-strong-national-defense

The American Legion is not part of TMC but I expect that most of our members are a member of a participating organization.

Helping Is As Easy As 1-2-3...

For many families vacations and pool memberships are the main financial pressures of summer. For others, those luxuries are out of reach. Instead, they worry about saving money to get their children ready for the coming school year. About one in five children under the age of 18 live in poverty in the United States, according to Communities In Schools. The cost of backpacks and supplies add up quickly and is enough to bust a struggling family's budget.  How you can help? Back to School Roundup serving qualified Tarrant County children grades Pre-K through 12 has made it very easy! Backpacks filled with school supplies can be purchased through EPI on our special BTSRU page. One backpack with school supplies is $16.65 plus tax. Supplies purchased will be distributed at the Tarrant County Back to School Roundup on Thursday, Aug. 9.  BTSRU ONLINE SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE LINK

New IRS online tool offers expanded access to information on tax-exempt organizations; newly-filed data available to public for first time

The IRS introduced a new online tool designed to provide faster, easier access to publicly available information about exempt organizations.

The new Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS) replaces EO Select Check, a more limited tool available since 2012 that focused primarily on providing information on an organization’s tax-exempt status. Among the enhancements, the new TEOS tool includes images of newly-filed 990 forms and it’s mobile friendly so you can access it using smartphones or tablets.

"This new tool provides taxpayers an easy way to get information about charitable organizations," said Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter. "Tax-exempt organizations play a critical role in our nation, and this will provide greater insight for people considering donations."

-

Many tax-exempt organizations must file information returns by May 15; do not include Social Security numbers or personal data

The IRS reminds certain tax-exempt organizations using the calendar year as their tax year of the Tuesday, May 15 filing deadline for Form 990-series information returns. Organizations must not include Social Security numbers or personal data in their filings. Additional information is in the IRS Fact Sheet.

We need a flag ceremony on July 1

We, The Legacy Singers (LegacySingers.org), are putting together a 4th of July program as we do every year. This year, on the evening of July 1, we are looking for an organization that can do a 15-minute flag ceremony at the start. Arlington National Cemetery -- Passed on by M. B. "BluHog" Ingersoll, Ride Captain, Patriot Guard Riders

Arlington National Cemetery will close for new burials in 23 years if current eligibility policies remain in place. Further expansions should not be expected to solve the dilemma at ANC. The next possible expansion, into the area south of the cemetery (the Southern Expansion; around 40 acres) will add about 10-15 years of life to the cemetery – closing the cemetery to new burials by the mid-2050’s. This does not achieve the objective or the desire of previous survey respondents to keep ANC open for new burials well into the future.

Please watch the video prior to taking the survey. https://www.youtube.com/embed/at0mXZozIzc?rel=0

Sales Tax Holiday for Emergency Supplies, April 28-30
(AUSTIN) — With the potential for severe weather approaching this spring, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds Texans they can purchase certain items tax-free during the state’s sales tax holiday for emergency preparation supplies, from April 28 to April 30.
“The severe weather we had last year — particularly Hurricane Harvey — was a stark reminder that Texans should be prepared for emergencies at all times,” Hegar said. “This tax holiday allows people to save money while ensuring they have the supplies they need before an emergency situation occurs.”

There's no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase. These include:

Batteries, fuel containers and flashlights priced at less than $75;

Hurricane shutters and emergency ladders priced at less than $300; and

Portable generators priced at less than $3,000.

Purchases that do not qualify include:

batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles;

camping stoves and camping supplies;

chainsaws; plywood; extension ladders and stepladders; and tents.

A list of emergency preparation supplies that may be purchased tax-free can be found on the Comptroller’s website.
The Comptroller’s office estimates shoppers will save more than $1.5 million in state and local sales taxes during the tax holiday, which was approved by lawmakers during the 2015 Texas Legislature.

Earnings for your military service from 1957 through 2001 can be credited to your record for Social Security purposes

Special Extra Earnings for Military Service

Since 1957, if you had military service earnings for active duty (including active duty for training), you paid Social Security taxes on those earnings. Since 1988, inactive duty service in the Armed Forces reserves (such as weekend drills) has also been covered by Social Security.

Under certain circumstances, special extra earnings for your military service from 1957 through 2001 can be credited to your record for Social Security purposes. These extra earnings credits may help you qualify for Social Security or increase the amount of your Social Security benefit.

Special extra earnings credits are granted for periods of active duty or active duty for training. Special extra earnings credits are not granted for inactive duty training.

If your active military service occurred

From 1957 through 1967, we will add the extra credits to your record when you apply for Social Security benefits.

From 1968 through 2001, you do not need to do anything to receive these extra credits. The credits were automatically added to your record.

After 2001, there are no special extra earnings credits for military service.

SPECIAL INVITATION TO THE THEATER March 21, 2018 @ 6:00PM — 8:00PM

Tarrant County Veterans Council,

I’m writing on behalf of Texas Ballet Theater to invite your members to a special event that we are holding next week here in our Fort Worth studios.

Texas Ballet Theater will be performing a piece entitled Mozart Requiem, along with another work, during Easter weekend at Bass Hall. Our Artistic Director, Mr. Ben Stevenson, created Mozart Requiem after being impacted by words shared with him by a U.S. army soldier who served in Afghanistan. The dancers who will be performing this piece expressed an interest to our staff to hold a special evening with a performance of this piece in honor of men and women who currently or have previously served our country, as well as a time to meet them, speak with them, and hear their stories. They realize that the meaning of this piece goes deeper than just outwardly portraying a role, and they are sincerely interested in interacting with those who have made a sacrifice greater than they could understand without meeting them and hearing from them personally.

Details are below, and I am happy to answer any questions that you have. The evening will be casual, with a rehearsal performance of the piece followed by a time to enjoy some light refreshments and for audience and dancers to speak with one another if they wish.

On behalf of Texas Ballet Theater, please accept our sincerest thanks for your service. We hope that you’ll join us.

Worlds only St. Paddy’s Pickle Parade and Palooza

Saturday, March 17th at 1:00pm

Downtown Mansfield, Texas

-

--- From Tarrant County Precinct 2 Commissioner Andy Nguyen

Moving forward into 2018, while we have had many successes, challenges are looming. Tarrant County added over 35,000 residents last year, topping two million in population and is expected to add one million more by 2035. Keeping three million people moving, living, working, learning, and thriving requires proactive leadership and frugal stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE

This is an election year starting with the primaries on March 6th. Take the time to educate yourself on the candidates and where they stand on issues important to you. Then VOTE in all your local elections! Your city council person, school board trustee, mayor, et al, will someday be your senator, congressman, or governor.

You can also visit the Tarrant County Elections Department website to find out where to vote early and on Election Day, view a sample ballot, and review ID Requirements. If you have any trouble, please contact our office directly at 817-548-3900.

NOTE: Generally, primaries are in March; city/school board elections in May; and county/state/federal elections in November.

--- Passed on from my cousin Shirley:

A number of you may have attended one of Bob Hope’s shows.  This time of the year always reminds me of this great American with a heart and soul for the American military!

 Subject:  Bob Hope... It's Priceless
He would never be allowed to perform with his acts, today.

Girls, short skirts, off colored jokes, religious Christmas songs, all politically incorrect.

GREAT GREAT MAN.

This will most likely be the very best ten minutes of your day, hope you all enjoy this great AMERICAN PATRIOT.

++++++++++++++++

Here's a history lesson for today

Alan Alda first saw Bob Hope in WWII. Until the day he died his Dad never ever missed a Bob Hope special.  Alan remembered him laughing and

crying at every show but he never understood why.  Now he knows.

A little travel back in time.

Warning; this might make your eyes wet!  Those were the days.....jokes were funny, not disgusting.......and the girls were dressed to make them look pretty, not vulgar...

This is some priceless footage..... This is a great e-mail.  It makes me thankful that I am old enough to have lived in the time of Bob Hope.
