12/21/13 District 12 Update

Howdy Folks,

Sending this out a little early to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, happy holiday and hoping all remember the reason for the season.

While visiting with family and friends keep the January 5th ORATORICAL CONTEST in mind.  Their is no cost the Post, Unit, Squadron, Chapter, School, Contestant or their family to  enter.  The winner will get scholarship awards at each level.

“A CONSTITUTIONAL SPEECH CONTEST”

This is a scholarship opportunity available to eligible persons that may be submitted to your Post chairman by any Legion Family member.  Each public high school, private school, charter school, home schooled, with grades 9 thru 12 is allowed to advance 1 contestant to the district level.

Our District competition will be on Sunday, Jan 5, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Post 838.  We unfortunately have very few entries so the odds of winning are great.  The winner will go to Division for the opportunity to go to state and national with the potential to win over $20,000 in scholarships.

At the State level the winner of first place will be certified to National Headquarters as the Texas representative and the Department will be award a $2,000 scholarship to the college of his/her choice; 2nd place – $1,500 scholarship; 3rd place $1,000; 4th place $500 (provided the winner enters college in the fall term after graduation from high school).

The Department Champion will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship from National provided he/she participates in the Quarter Finals Contest and an additional $1,500 scholarship from National if the participant advances to the Semi Finals Contest and does not advance to the National Finals.  Competitors in the National Finals are awarded scholarships as follows; 1st – $18,000; 2nd – $16,000; 3rd – $14,000.

The department link is on our home page with details and links to all the forms.

http://txlegion.org/programs/oratotical/.   Current forms and information should have delivered to your post and all Texas High Schools by mail.

A Power Point Presentation that can be downloaded from our server and modified for your post http://www.txlegiondist12.org/Oratorical_2013_2014-mod.ppt

Our District Chairman is our District Commander Joe Page and he will be happy to assist anyone with details about the program.

Imagine that, an opportunity for teenagers to learn about Our Constitution.

For God and Country,

Ken

Greetings and Happy Holidays!  Just a friendly reminder that our 12th District Christmas party is scheduled for Monday, December 16th at Bedford Post 379 at 7pm.  I hope that all of you will join us for this fun evening of remembering or blessings and celebrating this joyous season.

They have asked that each Unit bring a side dish - potatoes, vegetable, etc. Desserts are always welcome too!  We will have the Chinese gift exchange which I think is always a fun way to pass the time.  There is no obligation to participate (it's also fun to watch!), but if you would like to play please bring a wrapped, generic gift.  Let's keep it to a small limit ($10, $15 max) and please no gag gifts.

May all of you be blessed with the joy of the holiday season, and may our men and women in uniform who are away from their families find some comfort in knowing that we are praying for their safe return and that we are at the service of their families.

Happy holidays to all.  Wow it's looking a lot like Xmas and I'm hoping that all is well with you and yours.  Let me remind everyone about the District Party on Monday, December 16th at Post 379 at 7:00 p.m. Come prepared to have a good time and bring a generic gift ( $10 to $15, no gags) so that we can join the aux exchanging gifts.

Now, I have to do a little business.  Our membership numbers look good so let's keep on pushing.  We are being monitored closely by the Division Commander and I would like to have a good report to Department by the 1st of the year.   Remember, our goal is for all posts is to be at 100% by March. So get your updates in to Department ASAP.

Also let me remind Post Commanders about our $100 commitment to the Coffee Fund for the VA, it is running low. Please send your money to Brenda Straten, Treasurer, 4209 Gentle  Springs Dr., Arlington, Tx 76001.

12/5/13 Special District 12 Snowball Express Update (also sent to SAR, TCVC and Div. 1 Hubmaster)

OK Folks,

Here is the schedule and BluHog says all that needs saying so I am just passing his email along.

Hope to see lots of our folks out (and hope the weather is as nice as it was for Veterans Day).

(front of flyer) (back of flyer with map)

Ken

Ps; Thanks Mark,

Just got the scanned flyer and it looks great (attached to this email) and the email seems to go through fine as is.

Ken,

This is NOT the flyer I was gonna send you; it's not even a flyer, at all - but maybe you can work some HTML or CSS or whatever magic and make it available for our District.  Snowball is asking anyone and everyone who can come and be there for our Gold Star families to do so at each of the events they'll be attending.  This flyer covers events in the Dallas area on Friday, 13 DEC, and the Walk of Gratitude in Fort Worth on Saturday, 14 DEC.

I am still hoping to get the other flyer in a digital version (my scanner's OK, but my home computer's fried).  This flyer is two-sided, includes a map, and it's all about the Walk of Gratitude in Fort Worth so it's primo for our District.

I'll keep trying to get it to you.

Thanks!

--- The information below is provided by the A.L. Department of Texas.

Lady’s and Gentlemen,

FRAUD ALERT:  Veterans should be aware of a marketing scam targeting callers trying to reach the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Call Center or GI Bill Call Center.  A marketing company has established two fraudulent numbers that differ from the two official VA call center numbers by one digit.  If the fraudulent number is dialed by mistake, the answering party will offer a gift card and try to obtain personal and financial information, including credit card information, from the caller.  The answering party may even transfer the caller to the VA after the caller’s information is obtained.  Note that VA will never ask you for a credit card number or banking information over the phone. Before giving personal sensitive information over the phone make sure you know who you are taking to.

The numbers to be avoided are:

800-872-1000  (the VA National Call Center number is 800-827-1000)

888-442-4511 (the VA GI Bill Call Center number is 888-442-4551)

VA has notified law enforcement authorities to address this situation.  Please pass this information along and post on your websites.

Wanted to let you know that we got together recently and set the date for the Allied Ride for 2014, we had to set the date a week ahead due to some other countries conflict with the weekend that it should have been on, so we came up with the 28th of June! This date was sent to all Countries and States and seems to be the best for everyone! We have added a few more countries this year as well as States, and we are not done, we are working on a few more! http://www.txlegiondist12.org/2014AMRR.png

I would also like to add my sincere appreciation to all you folks for what you do for the Allied Ride, you make this what it is, an AWESOME event to Remember and Honor not only our Fallen Heroes, but that of our Allies who have stood with our Warriors in Harm's Way.

--- Plano Chili Cook-Off

Attached is the announcement and invitation to participate in the 25th Annual Chili Cook-Off on September 21st at Plano Post 321.

For Questions on Rules or Application...Just contact Ann Hartline at 972-907-9281

---- Greetings 1st Division, District Commanders and Post Commanders,

Note to District Hub Masters; please forward this communication to all Post Commanders in your District, thanks!

During the recent State Convention two Legionnaires from each Division were trained and certified to teach The American Legion Extension Institute course.  The two trainers from the 1st Division are Gene Toohey, Greenville Post 17 & Fred Rogers, The Colony Post 21.

What this means to us is that the ALEI course can now be efficiently and effectively presented on a local level and the attendees will be awarded their ALEI graduate hat pin on the spot at the completion of the course.  This is a gigantic step forward for our State Training program and we want to train and graduate as many Legion members from this course as possible.

The course takes about 4 hours and only costs $5.00.  Graduates will be able to discuss The American Legion knowledgeably with prospective members and will become an increased valued asset as we move forward with our Statewide focus on membership growth.  The course is divided into 5 sections; History & Organization, Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.  Anyone who has taken the old course will benefit from this newly designed course.

Our initial campaign is to set up trainings at centralized Posts in each District and invite surrounding Posts to attend.  With that in mind, we are asking that Post Commanders interested in hosting this training contact us and help us move this initiative forward.

We can be contacted as follows:

Gene Toohey - 303-718-4819 or socogun@yahoo.com

Fred Rogers - 972-977-9342 or frrtx@icloud.com

We look forward to hearing from you with your commitments to be involved in this important training.

Fun weekend

Friday I saw folks from Posts 297, 356, 379, 467, 516, 569, 624, 626, 655 and 838 at the convention, and I probably missed some.

Saturday we worked on the Veterans Day Parade – only 4 months to go, sure could use more participation putting it together.

Midnight Madness Car show at Post 516 had 60 entries and more showing up too late to register.  I left early and it was still after midnight.

Pictures: http://www.12dis.org/scrapbook/20130714car/

Sunday the State of Texas installed or own Bill Kuehner as SAL Detachment Commander and it rained.

Working on these pictures as we speak (convention, not rain)

--- Veterans Memorial Air Park in Fort Worth

Forward from Gary Smith, Division 1 Hubmaster

From: Jim Hodgson,

Attached please find a PRESS RELEASE regarding the A-12 Avenger II mockup being moved to the Veterans Memorial Air Park in Fort Worth, Texas from Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth facility.

(if Press release dated June 28, 2013  no longer attached – see them at their web page)

In 1983 the U.S. Navy began a program to replace the A-6 Intruder attack aircraft called the Advanced Tactical Aircraft (ATA).  The A-12 Avenger II aircraft was designed as a deep strike attack airplane that relied on stealth technology and was planned to fly by 1994.  It never flew.

A McDonnell Douglas/General Dynamics team won the design concept in 1988.  Work on the “black program,” code named Secret Bravery, took place in St. Louis and Fort Worth at Air Force Plant #4 (now Lockheed Martin).  Ultimately the Pentagon canceled the program in 1991 under a cloud of controversy.

July 10th -14th - 95th DEPARTMENT CONVENTION Irving, Texas

Schedules and registration forms: http://txlegion.org/conventions/department-convention/

--- Subject: Parade Shirts for the National Convention From: Bryan Coleman

The Texas delegation marches last because we are the host city, even though we will be in the top five departments.  The uniform for the parade is cowboy boots, a shirt which may be purchased at the State Convention, and a cowboy hat.

Each post needs to determine how many people will march in the American Legion National Parade, get their shirt sizes, gather the money for the shirts ($38 per shirt to size X, and $2 extra for each additional X), since the Texas delegation wears a uniform polo shirt, a cowboy hat, and boots in the parade.  The shirts tend to run a size smaller than normal, so I recommend you buy a size larger than you usually wear.  The are well made shirts, having the Texas flag on the front of them, and will last for years.  If you get the information and money to Bill West, he will have them boxed and ready at the State Convention, where someone can bring them all back in a car or truck for distribution to the purchasers.  Thank you.

-- AUTUMN’S ANGEL BEARS

The folks at Snowball Express were so grateful and impressed by what Autumn (with the help of her American Legion friends) accomplished last year; collecting 3000 stuffed animals for them. They have challenged her to get 3,500 for the event this year.  Sadly, the number grows every year.  Snowball's total focus is on the minor children of our fallen military.  Autumn is asking for help from her Legion family again this year.  We will be having a "Collection Party” at the American Legion Post 516 on October 5th 2013.

Autumn would love to come to each post to tell you "Thank You" and to ask for your help again.  You can contact her on FACEBOOK at ”Autumn's Angel Bears”, or email me (David Fenn) at    defenn1956@yahoo.com.  I'm her pawpaw.

Thank You

As most of you know, the City of Houston will be hosting the National Convention in August of this year. To make the convention a success, we will need many volunteers to work before, and during the convention.

Some of the Committee’s that will need a lot of volunteers at the George R. Brown Convention Center include:

Badges & Packets Committee (Butch Sparks, Chair) email: butchsparks@comcast.net

This committee is responsible for setting up the Badges & Packets Office, putting the packets together and distribution of said packets to the various members of the American Legion Family. Dates volunteers are needed are: August 20th, August 21st (many volunteers needed), August 22nd, 23rd, 24th & 25th if necessary.

Information Committee (Lynn Sparks, Chair) email: lynnesparks@comcast.net. For specific information please contact Lynn

Parade Committee: (Glenn Scott, Chair) email: pisbpa@earthlink.net (Glen Moody, Vice Chair) email: gmoody@sbcglobal.net (dates needed August 24 & 25th) For specific information please contact Glenn Scott or Glen Moody.

If you can help with one or more of these committees, please send the Committee Chair your name, phone numbers (home & cell) and email address.

We need to get these committees finalized so we can set up committee meetings and give the volunteers specific information and direction.

Other Convention questions should be directed to John D. Morris at Jokamorris@aol.com

Please give this email the widest dissemination. Let’s help Texas make this the best convention ever.

Thanking You in Advance

Butch

--- Update: Jul 6th (Saturday) – Allied Memorial Remembrance Ride

From: George (Tank) Sherman
Wanted to share that after the Terrell Memorial Day Service, we went to the British Museum to have a small meeting, and Beverly brought up a suggestion to honour a certain gentleman for this years ride to Terrell, Tx, We talked about it for awhile and agreed.

The 2013 Texas Allied Memorial Remembrance Ride on July 6th will be to Honour Flight Lieutenant Leslie Broderick, May 19 1921 to April 8 2013, was trained to fly here in Terrell, flew the Lancaster bomber on 18 Missions, became a Prisoner of War, and was one of the 3 last survivors of the Great Escape, finally becoming a teacher in South Africa.

But that is not where it stops, I contacted an individual that Norman and I have been talking to in South Africa, Demetri Friend and is a member of the South African Legion, once we do the ride here in Texas, we will send the Dedication Plaque to Demetri in South Africa to deliver it to the family of Flight Lieutenant Leslie Broderick, So an Honour and Remembrance Ride here in Texas, and a Delivery Ride in South Africa!

Goes to show, if you want mass confusion and not get things done give it to a POLITICIAN, if you want it done, give it to a BIKER http://www.alliedride.org/

ASSOCIATED PRESS May 23, 2013, 9:59 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lying about receiving a military medal could become a crime, under a bill headed to the president’s desk.

The Stolen Valor Act cleared the Senate Wednesday and the House earlier this week. The act makes it a crime to lie about military medals, if the purpose is to benefit from the claim.

The measure revives a law struck down by the Supreme Court. The court said it may be disreputable to lie about receiving a medal, but it’s protected under the First Amendment.

This bill is narrower, making it a crime to lie about being decorated with the intent to profit personally or financially. It’s sponsored by Nevada Republicans Joe Heck in the House and Dean Heller in the Senate. Violators could face up to a year in prison.

July 27 and 28 - training in Killeen Texas

Please note:

As mentioned in the 1st Division Meeting held on May 11, this training will actually take place in Killeen, TX. It was also mentioned that Adjutants training would be conducted separately as well. However, Adjutants DO NOT get a call. Bill West indicated that if the Commander or Vice Commander could not attend, something could be worked out to cover the Adjutant. Contact Bill West for further details or specific arrangements.

Regards,

Gary Smith

Dear Legionnaires:

Department is going to have another training in Austin on July 27 and 28, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, and 9:00 am to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Once again, Department is paying call in mileage and providing hotel accommodations. Once again, Department is hopping for a large turnout, two people from each post, to be trained in Legion programs, protocol, and procedures.

Last time, 300 Legionnaires attended; but only less than 200 posts were represented. This time, Department would be pleased to get two people, the commanders and/or other promising leaders from each post in Texas. The training has contributed to raising Texas from no. 47 to no. 7 in National ranking and taught many post leaders the mechanics of operating an American Legion post and how to deal with issues which routinely come up.

Please mark your calendars an plan to come. It's free, it's important, and it's working. Thank you.

Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day

On Saturday, March 30th, please join American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit 626 for an evening of celebration as they come together to honor the immeasurable sacrifices and contributions our Vietnam War veterans have made to protect the life, liberty and happiness of every American. Senator Wendy Davis Files Bill to Help Veterans Land Jobs

Davis files Senate Bill 229, to provide veterans in Texas a fast track to obtaining commercial driver's licenses

AUSTIN -- Senator Wendy Davis today announced the filing of Senate Bill 229, to smooth the way for veterans in Texas to find good-paying jobs after they leave the service. The bill implements a federal law which allows states to waive the domicile requirement to award a commercial driver's license.

"Our veterans are a tremendous asset to Texas," said Davis. "This legislation recognizes the experience of men and women serving in our Armed Forces and provides the means for them to obtain good paying jobs as soon as possible."

Davis's legislation implements the Military Commercial Driver's License Act, passed by Congress and signed into law last fall. That legislation allows states to waive residency requirements for commercial licenses for service members living in the state. Skills and safety testing requirements are unchanged under the legislation. The bill was backed by the American Legion and the Truckload Carriers Association.

"On behalf of the veterans of Texas, I'd like to thank Sen. Davis for carrying this bill," said Bill West, State Adjutant, The American Legion, Department of Texas. "Members of the military are trusted with the lives of their fellow service members and millions of dollars in equipment. This bill translates those responsibilities into the opportunity to earn a good paycheck when they leave the military."

According to recent data by the American Trucking Association, there are over 200,000 unfilled trucking jobs in the United States. Texas is a national leader in heavy and tractor trailer driver jobs, a demand that's only increased with the development of the Barnett and Eagle Ford Shale oil fields. Commercial drivers in Texas earned over $37,000 a year in 2011.

"Texas is a leader in finding jobs for veterans," said Thomas Palladino, executive director of the Texas Veterans Commission. "Efforts which assist veterans’ entry into the workforce by valuing their experience and military skills are a win-win for Texas."

--- From Ken, WOW – take a moment to see the following presentation, fantastic. ---

--- From Tina Hill, Dist 12 Auxiliary VP and Unit 626 President

Our Unit National Security Chairman, Harriet Wright, put together a great PowerPoint presentation on the story of the USS Fort Worth, which we presented to the 2nd thru 5th graders at Burton Hill Elementary on November 2nd.

Harriet forwarded the presentation to T.D. Smyers, President of the USS Fort Worth Commissioning Committee. Captain Smyers is also the former Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, and he now serves as the CEO at American Red Cross, North Texas Region.

Captain Smyers was very impressed with the presentation, and as a result, the presentation is now posted on the USS Fort Worth website.

http://ussfortworth.org/the-story-of-the-uss-fort-worth-for-elementary-students/

The following is Captain Smyers reply to Harriet:

Harriet,

This is marvelous. I'm so very proud of how you and the American Legion Team have continued as ambassadors of our Ship to the community; especially our youth!

With your permission, I'd like to post this presentation on our Committee website for others to see and use in presenting the story of USS Fort Worth to our young citizens.
