--- From the Greater Meadowbrook News

ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT:

STATE INCOME TAX in TEXAS
Texas is one of the last states that does NOT have a state income tax on top of Federal income tax. Some politicians in Austin want Texas to start a state income tax. Of course, lawyers and legislators write in double-speak, and they deliberately word an item to confuse the voter.

A "yes" vote supports this amendment to prohibit the state from levying an income tax on individuals.

A "no" vote opposes this amendment, thus continuing to allow the state to enact a tax on individuals in the future through a statewide referendum.
Make sense vote YES to PROHIBIT state income tax.
Vote NO to Allow state to start income tax’s?

September is National Preparedness Month: Be Prepared, Not Scared

Original release date: August 28, 2019

National Preparedness Month (NPM) promotes family and community disaster and emergency planning. This year’s theme is “Prepared, Not Scared.”

-

Although most people understand that being prepared is essential to getting through an emergency such as a natural disaster, there is less awareness about the necessity of cybersecurity preparedness. Cybersecurity preparedness is often a deciding factor on how much an impact a cyber-related event—such as a ransomware infection, identify theft, or data breach—has on an individual or an organization.

-

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) encourages individuals and organizations to develop their own cyber emergency response plans that include guidance on protections and controls such as keeping software and operating systems updated, regularly backing up files, keeping encrypted copies of important documents offline, and routinely running anti-virus scans.

Learn more about National Preparedness Month at Ready.gov/September and see Ready.gov/Cybersecurity and the following CISA Tips for resources on preparing for, and responding to, unexpected cyber-related events:

-- GoFundMe Account to Support the Fort Worth Aviation Museum

We were hit by a storm Sunday 6/16/19 that damaged eight aircraft and destroyed our Kiowa.  Below is a link to a GoFundMe account to help us recover.  Please share the link with your friends and veterans groups.

Thank you, everyone, for your outpouring of support. After assessing the impact of the storm, we are setting the damage at $43,500. The Kiowa is a total loss, severely impacting our educational outreach program. It will cost at least $21,000 to replace that helicopter. In total, eight aircraft were damaged along with associated equipment and roof damage. We are working with our insurance company to determine if any of this "Act of God" will be covered. For now, we have set up a GoFundMe account to allow anyone to support our recovery efforts. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. We have already received over $2,000 from Facebook donations and those will be counted toward the total. Our first priority is replacing our Kiowa and repairing our Birddog.

Here is the link for the GoFundMe account. https://www.gofundme.com/f/fort-worth-aviation-museum-storm…

Mr. Sharp,
I'm enclosing what my request is: Could you put me in touch with someone who could assist? Could you be of assistance? I'm in Fort Worth Texas. *Thank you for your Service.* Service First Automotive will be holding a flag raising ceremony on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at 10:00am at our brand new repair facility located at:8732 Harmon Road. Fort Worth, Texas 76131.
We would be honored if members of the American Legions/VFW would be present and help partake in the ceremony (say a few words and speak at the event) We currently need 4-5 active duty members and 7-10 veterans to help assist with the Flag raising. The flag is about 24’x48’ so the more help the better. At previous Ceremonies we’ve had Boy Scouts attend and played a bugle or some sort of music to accompany the Flag Raising. (Would you have anything like that to bring?)  Please let me know if any members can help with the ceremony. It would be greatly appreciated.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,

One of the “Ten Things You Didn’t Know About the Fourth of July” from the July 1, 2019 Chisholm Trail News

The Declaration wasn’t signed on July 4 (or in July at all). It's now generally accepted that the Declaration of Independence wasn't signed on the Fourth of July—that's just the day the document was formally dated, finalized, and adopted by the Continental Congress, which had officially voted for independence on July 2 (the day John Adams thought we should celebrate). Early printed copies of the Declaration were signed by John Hancock and secretary Charles Thomson to be given to military officers and various political committees, but the bulk of the other 54 men signed an official engrossed (finalized and in larger print) copy on August 2, with others to follow at a later date. Hancock (boldly) signed his name again on the updated version.

Confidence in your equipment

In the Army you must know how to march before being issued a vehicle.

In the Navy you must be able to swim to go on sea duty on a ship.

In the Marines you’re trained in hand to hand combat before being issued a weapon.

No one I know in the Air Force can fly without an aircraft but there is always a tavern near an airfield.

“to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the great wars;”

Good evening everyone,

This note is specifically for members of the Tarrant County Veterans Council, but I think many of you will find this of interest.

For three years several of us have been discussing a memorial for the 200 Tarrant County residents who were casualties of the Vietnam War.  There is no Vietnam War Era memorial in Tarrant County. Although this project would be of interest to the Tarrant County Historical Commission, the Fort Worth Aviation Museum will take the lead on this initiative.

Please read the attached document, and if you or others you know might be interested in getting involved please let me know.  Please feel free to pass this along

Best regards,

Marine Reunion

jmvongillern<jmvongillern@yahoo.com>

6/6/19 at 9:34 AM - To: post@post516.org

Good Morning,

I am reaching out to you in hopes that you can help, or provide better information for all of the Marines of 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion (3rd CEB).

On September 20-23rd, 2019 we will have over 200 Marines and their families, in the Dallas -Fort Worth area, to hold a reunion.  This reunion will allow the Marines to reconnect and take a stand against PTSD. We are trying to stop the 22 a day, and this is our beginning efforts, to do so.

We will also have the 20 families of our fallen Marines, in attendance for the reunion.  We will be holding a ceremony on that Saturday, and would be honored if you would be willing to come speak to these Marines and their families .

We know you have a busy schedule, and that is why I am reaching out so early. We would be honored to have you, or any information or sponsors, who might be willing to help donate to this event. I have taken on the responsibility of their reunion, to try and pay these men back for my freedom, but I can not do this alone . Any insight you have about making this an amazing event, would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Jennifer von Gillern

Subject: TARRANT VETERANS 2019 Memorial Day Service

Dear Veterans,
Memorial Day is fast approaching... And this year's Memorial Day will commemorate 90-years of Tarrant County Veterans participating in the Mount Olivet Cemetery Memorial Day Service. This is outstanding and we look forward to seeing many veterans in attendance.
However,
through the years  and  for whatever reason, we have seen a gradual decline in area veteran attendance and participation.  As the oldest and largest Memorial Day Service in Tarrant County we feel the duty to keep this day special for everyone, but especially for Veterans and would like to do what we can to rekindle Veteran attendance and participation in this day of remembrance.  Any advice or help you can provide to encourage more veterans to attend would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure better communication on our part would help this effort.

To give you more information, I am attaching a press release that will be going out and a copy of an ad that will be running in the newspaper.  Feel free to distribute both.  The service is a beautiful memorial and we would love to see as many veterans and their families attend on this One Day/One Hour/To Remember.

Also, we would like to see as many veterans groups participate in the "Laying of the Wreath Ceremony" as possible.  To do so, all any organization has to do is show up with a wreath and sign in prior to the start of the service.  Near the end of the service members with wreaths will be announced as they walk the promenade and place their wreath in front of the Doughboy and American GI Statue.

Here is the general information:

Date:  Memorial Day, Monday, May 27

Place:  Mount Olivet Cemetery

2301 N. Sylvania @ 28th Street / Fort Worth / 76111

(near the center of the cemetery)

Time:  6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

In case of rain, the service will be held in Greenwood's Mount Olivet Chapel Funeral Home at the same address.

In closing... If we don't remember our fallen heroes in our city we stand to lose something very important.  Our nation's freedoms. Our Veterans are the backbone to our nation and are to be honored.  The area Veterans that died for us must be remembered if our freedom is to continue.

Thank you for your service and we look forward to seeing hundreds of veterans Memorial Day at Mount Olivet.

All the Best,

JOHN  OTT

Fantastic 1st Division,

The 1st Division Convention is not that far away. Registration deadline is April 13, 2019. Only one (1) week away. To date here are some numbers of registration:

Legion - 16 Posts with 27 Registered

Auxiliary - 18 Posts with 35 Registered

SAL - 1 Post with 1 Registered

On April 13, 2019 we have to do a preliminary report to the hotel concerning estimated number of lunches for the 1st Division Joint Session. With only 63 pre-registered at this time, the 1st Division will have to reduce our estimated lunches. That means if attendees DO NOT Pre-Register, there may not be lunches available.

With 63 pre-registered and if 37 wait to pay-at-the-door, 25 would not be guaranteed to have a lunch meal.

We must have 127 pre-register. We are barely half-way there to that number. If you are attending the 1st Division, please mail your registrations ASAP.

If you do not pre-register, you can attend the 1st Division Joint Session but there will be no guaranty of a lunch meal.

Invite your local Boy Scouts to your post meeting in recognition of Scout Sunday – 08 February is Scouting Anniversary Day. In an effort to acknowledge the event, each year the Boy Scouts of America designates the first or second Sunday in February as Scout Sunday, which is to recognize the contributions of young people and adults in Scouting. Sunday is chosen due to the fact that of the more than the 100,000 Scouting units owned and operated by chartered organizations, approximately 70% are chartered to faith-based organizations who traditionally meet on Sunday, 22% are chartered to civic organizations like The American Legion, and nearly 8% of are chartered to educational organizations. Invite them to post the colors, participate in the general membership meeting opening/closing, tell you about the Scout Oath, Law, and Motto, thank them for their service to the community state and nation, ask them if they have a relatives who served, teach them about our organization and remind them that if they choose to serve in the military that they may be eligible for membership in The American Legion.

District Commanders; please pass on to your Posts.

Commander Reistad calls for 'Buddy Check National Week of Calling'

American Legion National Commander Brett Reistad has designated the week leading up to the organization’s 100th birthday, March 10-16, as “Buddy Check National Week of Calling.” He’s asking departments, districts and posts to put together teams to call expired members and those who have yet to renew, and to check in with current members and let them know that “we are a better American Legion with their involvement,” Reistad said during The American Legion’s National Membership and Post Activities Committee meeting in Indianapolis, Jan. 11-12.

“A phone script could be something I close meetings with … ‘Thank you for your service to our country and thank you for your continued service to our communities, our veterans and youth through your membership in the American Legion Family.’”

A “Buddy Check National Week of Calling” toolkit was talked through during the meeting with committee members and members of the Legion’s 21st Century Ad Hoc Committee. The toolkit will be released soon and will contain several items such as introduction letters to departments, districts and posts detailing what the week of engagement is and their role; sample phone scripts; a buddy-check poster; ways to access expired lists through MyLegion.org; specifics to share about what The American Legion does from the national, department and post level; and incentives for conducting the week of calling.

“This is coming from our commander. When he says he wants a week of calling, we’re going to do that. This is very important,” said Membership & Post Activities Committee Chairman Rev. Daniel J. Seehafer of Wisconsin. “I really, truly believe that this will be the basis for our retention. It has to start somewhere.”

Past National Commander David Rehbein stressed that “this is important enough that we need to stop everything else (during March 10-16) and concentrate on contacting our members.”

When Paul Dillard of Texas, the national commander’s representative on the National Legislative Commission, called on former Legionnaires who had let their membership expire he had an 85 percent success rate. “Call on those expires, and they will rejoin,” he said.

A message Seehafer said that can be shared with expired members is, “Thank you for your service. Help us celebrate The American Legion’s 100th birthday and lead us into our second century strong by becoming a part of our family.”

In addition to the call for members to make personal contact in their communities, Reistad reiterated his new Team 100 recruitment and retention awards. A post that signs up a former Legionnaire whose membership expired in 2014, 2015 or 2016 can receive $5 each for every one of those members who rejoins in the 2019 membership year. American Legion departments worldwide can receive $2,500 in reward bonuses by hitting their 100 percent membership goals by May 8, 2019. Those departments who hit 105 percent by June 30, 2019, will receive an additional $5,000 each.

Seehafer shared that a department who has been reaching out by phone to expired members said a response they are hearing is, “'Now you call?’ It says something doesn’t it? The intention is for this to be an annual thing. And so when we talk about a national week of calling, it’s not just those who are expired. We want to call every single member of the American Legion Family. Every single member … ‘How’s it going? Just want to thank you for being a member.’

“We want to take this message … the why. Why we belong and take that to the next level.”
